Sweet Chestnut

This has been our latest major project, after spending over two years researching and checking information and compiling the first social history of the tree in Britain. We had no idea that this tree has been so important and it is still involved directly with some fifty occupations in Britain. The variety is amazing and not possible to convey in just one talk, so we have been offering a selection of themes and the two most popular are:

(1) Sweet Chestnuts and the Romans in Britain - questions whether the Romans introduced it and if so, why, and then traces it story through to modern times - everything from food to vineyards.

(2) Sweet Chestnuts - A Walk in the Park - tells the story of the ancient specimen trees and avenues in the parks that we enjoy visiting. Who invented avenues? Where is the oldest ?
