Gorse, Broom and Heathlands

As an alternative to the Heathers and Heathland talk there is also this new one on the Gorse and Broom. Once again, it traces the uses of these plants and reveals what an important part they have played in our English social history - from the execution of Thomas Cranmer to the baking of bricks for the Victorian building boom. Gorse cleaned chimneys, cleaned wells, kept horses fed and fit and was the basis for people's beds. Broom takes us to the work of the shearers in the medieval cloth industry and to modern medicine. Between them, these shrubs provide a wealth of interest as well as entertainment for a wide variety of groups.
