Chris
Howkins is primarily a writer and publisher, now specialising in books relating to the ways in which
our ancestors used plants to satisfy their daily needs. These are written
as monographs, or as theme books.
The books are designed to be attractive and serviceable to a wide range of
readership from the general reader to the the professional. They are illustrated
throughout as per the examples give on this site.
The contents
for the books are gathered from social and industrial history as well as unpublished
oral history - much of which is sourced from audiences at talks and lectures.
Wherever possible the material is verified by site visits to those that still
work the crafts, skills and knowledge today.
The material
is made available not only through his own publications but also talks, guided
walks, study days, adult education classes, conferences and university lectures
plus broadcasts on radio and television.
You can
email
us your questions on specific plants and there associated products. Our database
is reckoned to be the third largest of its kind in the country.
